Don’t Call Me Shirley

Hi everybody! Welcome back for another post. I apologize that the last post didn’t have any images. I was using a tablet when I wrote and uploaded it, and was unable to attach an image to the post. Nevertheless, I hope you all enjoyed it. It was my first time doing a post on a video game. But now it’s time to move on to our next topic. Today’s topic will be movies! The movie I have chosen for today is a classic, well at least I consider it to be a classic. The movie came out in 1980 and it’s called Airplane!

Airplane! starred Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, and Leslie Nielsen. It also co-starred Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Robert Stack. Barbara Billingsley, from Leave it to Beaver, made special appearances as the lady who spoke Jive. Most people I’ve spoken to about this movie aren’t too familiar with it. However, when I quote something from the movie they’ll respond with, “oh is that where that’s from? I’ve always heard that but never knew where it was from”.

Let me give you a brief description of what the movie is about, just in case there are people out there who doesn’t know Airplane! There is a man, Ted (Robert Hays), who has a fear of flying but must try and overcome his fear of flying to land the plane for an emergency landing when everyone in the cockpit gets sick. However, the men in the cockpit are not the only ones who got sick, several of the passengers on the plane also fall ill, which is the cause for the emergency landing. Chaos and hilarity ensues when a doctor onboard and the stewardesses try to keep the passengers calm while trying to solve the issue.

The movie starts off by making viewers think and feel it’ll be a suspense film. However, it is not a suspense or horror film. It is most definitely a comedy. I believe it is split equally between the physical comedy and the verbal comedy. A good portion of it is dumb stuff that it can’t help but be funny and I love it. Then there are some things that could come off as weird or inappropriate, but it’s so funny.

I think the things that most of the characters say, especially Leslie Nielsen’s character, are so hilarious because he’s acting so serious and he’s not trying to be funny. Well, now that I think about it, all the characters are acting serious, except one, so it makes everything they say seem even funnier. Although, there is one part that seems so out of place or out of character. It’s when Barbara Billingsley speaks Jive. I mean, Mrs. Cleaver speaking Jive? I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, it’s just a weird thing to comprehend. And maybe that’s why it’s funny, I don’t know.

There are a few good lines throughout the movie, and I’m not sure which one is my favorite. I think one of my favorite interactions is between the doctor (Leslie Nielsen) and one of the stewardesses. A couple of the passengers had fallen ill and the doctor was doing a little examination to find out why the passenger was sick. Leslie Nielsen told the the stewardess, “This woman needs to be taken to a hospital”. The stewardess replies, “A hospital? What is it?” She was concerned about the passenger and wanted to genuinely know what was wrong. But, the doctor answers with, “It’s a big building with patients”. Oh my god! It’s so funny!

I only wish more people knew about this movie. It’s so funny and good. I think it’s an absolute classic and an underrated movie. If you like Mel Brooks movies, then you’d enjoy this movie. It is not a Mel Brooks film, but the comedy is very similar to Mel Brooks. There is a classic line from the movie that I think everybody knows, whether they’ve seen the movie or not. Are you thinking that I can’t be serious? I can just hear you saying, “Surely, you can’t be serious.” Well here is my response, “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley”.

Thank you for joining me today. I hope you all enjoyed it. If you haven’t seen Airplane! you should check it out. If you like comedy movies, this is a good one to watch. Again, thank you for joining me today. I hope to see you all again soon. Take care.
