Missing Danny Tanner

Hello and thank you for joining me on my very first blog post! As most of you know we have lost a handful of icons and legends, in their own right, within the last few weeks, let alone the last few months. Well, I was stuck at home for a while and decided to do some binge watching. Of course, I started with all things related to Betty White (Golden Girls, Match Game, Hot in Cleveland). However, over the last couple of weeks, I switched it over to Bob Saget. I’m still in shock, as I’m sure the rest of you are, over the sudden loss of Bob Saget.

I started watching a handful of videos from his Podcast, “Bob Saget’s Here for You”, on YouTube. I then started watching some of the appearances he did on talk shows and other interviews he has done. Of course, I watched a few episodes of America’s Funniest Home Videos, which he hosted. And then of course, the most recent thing I watched are the Full and Fuller House series. I have this thing where I will watch a movie or a tv show after one of the beloved actors passes away.

Full House was my childhood. I grew up watching the Tanner family, as I’m sure many others did too. It was and still is a great family-friendly show. Just by watching him on Full House, he made it seem so effortless, being a dad to those three adorable little girls. Based on interviews and video clips I’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, Bob Saget and Jodie Sweetin mentioned that “life imitated art” in Bob Saget’s case. Bob had just had his first daughter when he got the roll of Danny Tanner. Bob Saget was the father of three girls on the show and he ended up with three girls in his personal life, too. At first Jodie Sweetin thought that art was imitating life, but Bob corrected her by saying it was the other way around. In his case, “life imitated art”.

I love seeing how close the entire cast was with each other. Well, after following most of them on social media, they are all still really close. That cast really did become their own little family and I think it’s amazing. It’s really sweet too. It is my understanding, from hearing an interview or a conversation between Bob Saget and Candace Cameron Bure, that it was Bob who wanted to have that sense of closeness, that sense of comfort and support. My heart still hurts for the Full House family, as well as Bob’s real-life family and friends, as they continue to grieve the loss of their patriarch.

To be perfectly honest, Danny Tanner was not one of my favorite characters. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that I don’t like. Now, I’m not saying I hate him… no. There is no character that I hate. I have my favorites, sure, the rest are just ones I like more than others. Bob did a fantastic job being Danny Tanner. Sure, he was over-protective of his girls, but what dad isn’t protective of his little girl? And sure, he had his quirks, but we all have our own little quirks. It’s what makes us, us. But, overall, Danny Tanner was a family man. He was all for hugs, which sounds a lot like Bob Saget himself.

Danny Tanner let people into his home. He found ways to get everybody to fit into his “full house”. That trait got passed down to his eldest daughter, Donna Jo Margaret Tanner. In the revival show, Fuller House, DJ does the same thing. She allows and welcomes people into her home, especially when they have nowhere to go. The Tanner house is a loving, wholesome place to be. Sure, there are obstacles to face, but that’s just a part of life. If I’m being honest, I prefer Fuller House over Full House. I’m not exactly sure why. It could be, because of the three, strong, amazing ladies that lead it. It could be because I get to see the girls, I grew up watching, be adults. Whatever the reason may be, Full House will always have a soft spot in my heart. How can it not? I grew up with it.

Danny Tanner, you have your quirks, but you are still one loveable guy, and quite the hugger. Bob, Danny Tanner, I will miss listening to your Podcast and how much you care about people. You will be greatly missed forever… but you will NEVER be forgotten.
